ANSWERS:

1. The game crashes to the desktop with an Unhandled Exception error during gameplay.
Try these steps:
  • Ensure your computer meets the minimum system requirements for the game.
  • Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.
  • Set your desktop settings to 640 by 480 and High Color (16 bit).
  • All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.
  • Turn the hardware acceleration for your sound card to Basic.

1) Go to the Start menu > Settings > Control Panel.
2) Double-click on the Multimedia icon.
3) Select the Audio tab.
4) Click on the Advanced Properties button in the Playback section.
5) Click on the Performance tab.
6) Reduce the Hardware acceleration to Basic, the 2nd notch from the left.
7) Click Apply and then OK 2 more times. Run the game now. Don't forget to turn the acceleration back up to restore the high-end features for your sound card when using other applications.

  • NOTE: Klingon mission 9 (Obedience) will crash after approximately 4 and a half minutes of play on game speed 11. It may give you a Unhandled exception error. It does not matter if you are fighting or just sitting around cloaked. This was originally seen on Admiral (hardest level of difficulty) but could be applicable to the two lower difficulty settings. This crash can be alleviated by completing the mission in under 4:30 minutes. The key to completing this mission within 4 minutes and 30 seconds is to concentrate on the convoy freighters. Other ships will fire and attack you. Ignore them. Destroy the freighters and you should finish the mission.
2. During play, the game crashed.
Try these steps:
  • Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.
  • Set your desktop to a resolution of 800x600, 32 bit True Color:

1) Right-click on your desktop and select Properties.
2) Click the Settings tab.
3) Set your screen area to 800x600.
4) Set the colors to 32 Bit (True Color). Under Windows NT this will be listed as 65554 colors.
5) Click Apply and OK.

3. When I launch the game I get the error DirectX 8.1 not installed, please install Directx 8.1 or later.

Install or reinstall DirectX 8.1 (or later). This can be found on the game CD in the DirectX folder. You can also download it from Microsoft's website. Please note that if you have installed a BETA version of DirectX such as DirectX 9 the game will not detect it. To correct this you can download and install the DirectX 9 patch for the game.

4. I receive a runtime library error when I launch the game.
  • Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.
  • Set your desktop settings to 640 by 480 and High Color (16 bit).
  • All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.
5. I get graphic corruption during the game.
  • Make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements of the game.

  • All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.
  • Change your monitor refresh rate to Adapter default:

5) If you are asked to restart the computer then do so.

6. I am having trouble playing online. I use a router.
Activision does not support the use of routers, gateways, firewalls or NAT. We cannot guarantee functionality of our games from behind a router. If you have no choice but to play from behind a router, please review the network_readme.doc file on the game CD.

7. I am getting "CD Key In Use" message when trying to log on to the Dynaverse?
1) Either you have just exited the Dynaverse and are trying to log back on right away. If you exit the Dynaverse, wait a few minutes before trying to log back on.

2) Someone else has your CD Key. No two players can play on the Dynaverse with the same CD Key.

8. Why can’t my Tactical officer fire multiple torpedoes at enemies?
The manual incorrectly states that a high Weapons Tech skill will allow your Tactical officer to fire multiple torpedoes in one volley. It is a high Targeting skill that allows your officer to perform this feat.

9. After playing the game for hours on end, it gets slower and more sluggish. What should I do?
Shut down the game and restart it. This should resolve the issue. If not, restart your computer to completely resolve the issue.

10. I receive an Insert CD error.
  • All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.
  • Delete all files in the Windows/Temp directory.
  • Do a complete ScanDisk.
  • Make sure you have 32 bit drivers for your CD-ROM drive.
  • Set the CD-ROM cache size to zero.

  • Make sure that the location for CD music to play is set correctly.
  • Make sure your system can successfully play Audio CD's.
  • Turn off Auto Insert Notification.
11. I am finished with the mission but the mission did not end. What do I do now?
In some missions, the objectives will not complete until your ship leaves the map. If you are in a mission and believe all objectives to be complete, try warping off the map to receive your victory accolades. For example, if you have destroyed all enemy shipyards on a Shipyard Assault, warp off of the map.

12. The game does not install properly. The game files are corrupted.
Do a desktop install:

1)Uninstall the game and delete the game folder.
2)Make a new folder on the desktop.
3)Right-click on the desktop and select New > Folder. You can name the folder whatever you want.
4)Double-click on the my computer icon. Now find the CD rom drive and right click on it. Select explore. Now you should have a new window showing the contents of the CD rom on the right side of the screen.
5)Go up to the menu and select Edit > select All. Now all of the contents of the CD rom should be highlighted.
6)Go back up to the edit menu and select copy.
7)Close all windows and go back to the desktop. Open up the new folder you made on the desktop.
8)Go to the menu at the top and select Edit > Paste. Now all of the files should be copying from the CD rom to the new folder. If there are any error messages during the copy process note them as they may indicate a bad disk.
9)Open the new folder on the desktop and run the setup.exe program. It should install.

13. I receive a D3D error when launching the game.

3) In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select the Display tab.
4) At the bottom make sure that DirectDraw Acceleration and Direct3D Acceleration are enabled.

  • All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.
14. There is sound in the background after completing a campaign, yet I cannot see what is happening. What's going on?

You are one of the few who cannot see the movies in front of your game window. If you do not see the movies or only hear the sound there are several possible fixes that you may need to follow:
  • Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.

  • Turn off Anti-Aliasing on your video card settings. Refer to your video cards documentation for help on how to do this or contact your manufacturer directly.
  • If all else fails, you can now either view them with the Bink player or you can press Alt-Tab while in the game until you can see the movies.
15. I see "???" at the end of a mission. What is this?
This is OS specific and only happens on Windows 98 or ME. If you are playing on Windows 2000 or XP, it will be displayed as "Mission Complete."

16. The Klingon mission "Anvil of Peace" does not end after tranporting the ambassador to the starbase.
This is most often caused by not listening to the voice overs all the way through. If you listen to the complete voice overs in the mission, this should properly end the mission.

17. When trying to connect to the Dynaverse, I get the message: "Server cannot detect your IP address. Please enter your IP address."

The following methods can be used to determine your IP address:

Windows 98 and ME:

1) From the desktop, select the Start Menu, and then select Run.
2) In the dialog box, type winipcfg and select OK. The IP Configuration window should appear.
3) If you have more than one adapter listed in the pull-down menu, select the adapter that connects your computer to the router or NAT (e.g. 3Com Etherlink PCI).
4) Once selected, the information relating to that adapter is displayed in the fields below. The IP Address is the number you will use when entering “the IP address of the computer on which you will be playing SFC3”, as mentioned in the examples in this document.

Windows 2000 and XP:

1) From the desktop, select the Start Menu, and then select Run.
2) In the dialog box, type cmd and select OK. An MS-DOS prompt should appear.
3) Type ipconfig, and press Enter. The words Windows IP Configuration should appear followed by information about your connection.
4) The IP Address is the number you will use when entering “the IP address of the computer on which you will be playing SFC3”, as mentioned in the examples in this document. If you have more than one adapter listed (e.g. Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection 2), most routers assign IP addresses in the 192.168.x.x

Additionally, if you are having any other issues connecting to the Dynaverse 3 multiplayer campaign mode, or need any information on configuring your router or your broadband connection to work with multiplayer, please consult the network_readme.rtf file. 19. What ports are needed to play via GameSpy?

Internet play through GameSpy Arcade requires additional ports to be open. If you have placed the system in the DMZ area of your router, the ports should be open and no further adjustments are needed. However, if using port forwarding, the following ports need to be opened:

80
6500
6667
13139
27900
28900
29900
29901

This will allow you to host, join and play skirmish matches through GameSpy Arcade. Skirmish mode through direct IP connection does not require these additional ports.

If you are having issues connecting to the Dynaverse 3 multiplayer campaign mode, or need any information on configuring your router or your broadband connection to work with multiplayer, please consult the network_readme.rtf file. You can access the file through the Start Menu, or in the location where you installed SFC 3 in the \Docs\Help\ directory. It is also located on your SFC3 CD under D:\Docs\Help\network_readme.rtf.

20. What ports does the game use for multiplayer?

The game uses ports 6073, 2302, 2303.

25. I am experiencing a big performance hit on a regular basis when playing the Conquest mode of the game. Is there a way around it?
You can alleviate the problem if you turn off the news in the Conquest game mode.

26. I lost my helm officer while in erratic maneuvers. Now, I cannot transport marines, tractor, launch shuttles or anything I would not be able to do during erratic maneuvers.
When you lose your helm officer in combat while erratic maneuvers is turned on, you will not be able to transport marines, tractor, launch shuttles or anything you would not be able to do during erratic maneuvers.

When you attempt to turn it off a message pops up stating you do not have enough experience to perform the action. Even though it appears that erratic maneuvers are not actually on, the game acts as if you are and will prevent you from performing other actions.

Currently, the only way to prevent this is to move your ship off the map and try the mission again.

27. I get a debug error.
  • Make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements of the game.
  • Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.
28. The Stardate stops in Conquest mode.
This particular issue seems to have to do with the way the game is saving. It is recommended that you save your game before each mission. You should save the game with a unique name.

29. I need to manually uninstall the game.
If you are having problems uninstalling the game you should manually remove it from your machine.
  • First it will be necessary to remove the registry keys the game creates. Please be cautious when working with the registry as it is very sensitive. Deleting the wrong thing can result in complete operating system failure:

1) Click the Start button > Run.
2) At the prompt type: REGEDIT. The registry editor will open.
3) Click the "+" next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4) Click the "+" next to SOFTWARE.
5) Click the "+" next to ACTIVISION.
6) Right-click on the STAR TREK FLEET COMMAND III folder and select delete..
7) Close the registry editor.

  • Once the registry keys are removed, we'll need to remove the game files from your hard drive. These instructions assume you've installed the game in the default directory:

1) Double-click My Computer.
2) Double-click the C:\ drive.
3) Double-click Program Files.

31. In Tutorial 4, Captain Picard mentions that I can direct an AI fleet member to defend a target. I cannot find this command in the menu. Where can I find this command?
This command was not implemented in the final version of the game and could not be edited out of the game.

32. I receive a blank "Incoming Hail." What is this?
When playing in Single Player, Dynaverse or Conquest a blank "Incoming Hail" message will occasionally pop up when you attempt to exit the refit screen. This is caused if another player (human or AI) asks to join your fleet and the player is in the refit screen has spent more prestige than they have. Once this "Incoming Hail" pops up, you will be stuck on the screen. The only way to get out of this screen is to Alt-F4 out of the game.

33. Zooming in or out does not work.
The default bindings for zoom are the "+" and "-" keys on your keyboard. If zoom is not working, try resetting your keyboard bindings to default. This can be done from the options menu. Make sure that you also press the Accept button after making any changes to bindings.

The zoom may also not work in certain camera modes if you are locked onto a target. In particular, this can happen in the overhead view.

34. I cannot click the buttons in the main menu.
On rare occassions, bypassing the intro movies with either the space bar or the left mouse button, may prevent the buttons on the main menu from working. The only way to correct this is to Alt-F4 out of the game and then restart it.

35. I get a Kernel32.dll error when I launch the game.
Make sure that you are running Windows 98 or better. This game will not work on Windows 95.

36. When rebooting the system after installing the game, I get the error: "Windows could not update the file %1 from %2."
This issue can occur if the Wininit.ini file is not processed correctly. The following is what Microsoft recommends to correct this:

To resolve this issue, rename the Wininit.ini file:
1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click Files or Folders.
2. In the Named box, type wininit.ini.
3. In the Look in box, click Local Hard Drives.
4. Click Search Now.

46. During install I get an I/O error.
If you have multiple drives and you are using a DVD-Rom drive then try installing the game from a regular CD-Rom drive or CD-R/RW drive. We have seen some issues with DVD-Rom drives and this game.  Try this:
  • Change the DMA setting on the CD-ROM drive.
  • NOTE: The following is unsupported by Activision. We have found the following to help the game install. Download Nero DriveSpeed from here. This freeware utility from Nero will allow you to slow your drive speed down, in increments, all the way to 2X. Try setting it to 8X. Some users may have to choose other settings to get optimal results. Your CD-ROM must be ATAPI / IDE. SCSI is not supported. If you receive an ASPI related error message when running Nero DriveSpeed, you may have to update your ASPI layer:

(Check ASPI version)
www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?filekey=aspichk.exe

(Latest ASPI version)
www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?filekey=aspi32.exe

With some Win9x systems, you may have to “force” the ASPI layer to install. For more information regarding this you can refer to: flexion.org/aspi

  • NOTE: The following is unsupported by Activision. Set your CD-ROM drive or IDE channels for the CD-ROM to run in PIO mode 1 or a lower setting then it currently is at through BIOS. The exact steps for doing this may differ from motherboard to motherboard. You will need to check with your hardware or system manufacturer for more information on this topic.
47. I cannot uninstall the game.
This answer is for an Advanced user. Please do not attempt the below solution if you are not comfortable editing the Registry. Damaging the Registry could result in very adverse effects to your system. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Remove the registry keys for the game.
1) Click on the Start button > Run.
2) Type REGEDIT at the prompt.
3) Click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
4) Click the + next to SOFTWARE
5) Click the + next to Activision
6) Right-click on the Star Trek Starfleet Command III folder and select Delete.

48. My weapons do not work when I go to red alert.
Uninstall the game, delete the game folder, and then reinstall the game. Make sure that you do not install any third party maps/mods/skins of any type.

Make sure that you wait a few seconds after entering the battle before going to red alert. If you go to red alert before all of the assets have loaded you may have problems with your weapons.
