1. My audio sounds distorted.
Your sound card is likely not 100% DirectX compatible. Cards that
are known to experience problems are: Yamaha OPL3 series, Analog
Devices, Sound 2, Ensoniq (Gateway 2000), IBM's MWAVE, and Compaq's
ESS.
Most sound card problems may be fixed by installing new drivers. |

2. I get an
error saying "Couldn't Load Default.cfg" when
I run the game.
If you try to run Star Trek Elite Force II and receive the error
message, "Couldn't Load default.cfg", the game is basically
telling you that it cannot find the \main directory that is part
of Star Trek Elite Force II. This error commonly occurs when the
game is installed with no directory specified. For example, if
you choose to install it to a hard drive or partition other than
the C: drive (that is, D:,E:, etc.), but fail to specify a folder,
the game will install everything to the root of the hard drive
and the game will not launch.
If you want to install the game to a hard drive
other than the default setting (C:), please make sure you specify
a folder when choosing the other drive (i.e.: D:\EF2). |

|
3. I experience extreme game slowdown and use SoundBlaster
SB PC1512
Users with Sound Blaster SB PCI512 sound cards will experience
system slowdown if you change the sound quality to 22 KHz. A quality
setting of 11 KHz should be used for optimum performance with this
sound card. |
|
|
|
4. I hear static during cinematics and gameplay and
use a Philips Harmonic Edge sound card.
Users with the Philips Harmonic Edge sound card may experience
static noise thoughout the cinematics and gameplay. In order to
eliminate this, set your sound card's hardware acceleration down
to Basic. To do this, from the Start Menu, select Run, then type
in dxdiag. Go to the Sound tab, and change your acceleration to
Basic Acceleration on the slider. |
|
|
|
5. I have multiple monitors and have trouble running
the game.
If you are running a machine with multiple monitors and the video
card for each monitor is an OpenGL compliant video card (e.g.,
GeForce series cards), you may experience problems running the
game, as the game will recognize both video cards. Simply disable
one of the monitors in the Windows® Display Properties. |
|
|
|
6. Issues with firewall software.
If you are using firewall software such as Zone Alarm and you are
experiencing problems, make sure your firewall software is set
to allow UDP packets through on ports 29250 and 29256. These
are the ports that Star Trek Elite Force II uses for connection,
message of the day, server browsing, and so forth.
In general we do not advise setting up a Star Trek
Elite Force II server on a machine that is also either a NAT
server (such as Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing) or set
up with ipForwarding for a Local Area Net (LAN) onto the Internet.
These machines see clients on your LAN as different addresses
from the Internet and thus you cannot authorize these clients. |
|
|
|
7. After I change my settings I can no longer
load saved games.
Exit out of the game and restart using Safe Mode by going to
the Start Menu > Programs > Star Trek Elite Force II > Play
Star Trek Elite Force II (Safe Mode). This will reset your settings
to a playable configuration.
This problem can be overcome by starting a new game from the
shell (where you have to pick a skill level). This will allow
you to once again load games from the shell. Exiting the game,
and launching again also fixes it. |

8. I need to manually uninstall the game.
To manually uninstall the game you need to Delete both the game
folder and the registry entries for the game.
1) Go to the directory where you installed the game (Default
is C:\Program Files\Activision\EF2) and delete the whole
EF2 folder.
2) Click the Start button > Run
3) Type: regedit (Press the Enter key) This will bring up the
registry editor.
4) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision\Elite
Force II and Delete it.
5) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall\Star Trek Elite Force II and Delete that. This should
remove the game completely from your system.
It might also be required to remove the EF2.INI file for the
game:
1) Click the Start button > Programs > Windows Explorer.
2) In the left pane, choose the drive Windows is on.
3) In the right pane, double-click on the Windows folder.
4) Again in the right pane, scroll down until you find a file
named EF2.INI(the file should have an icon of a notepad with
a yellow gear on it).
5) Highlight and delete the file.
6) Try to install the game now.
It might also be required to remove the EF2.INI
file for the game:
1) Click the Start button > Programs > Windows
Explorer.
2) In the left pane, choose the drive Windows is on.
3) In the right pane, double-click on the Windows folder.
4) Again in the right pane, scroll down until you find a
file named EF2.INI(the file should have an icon of a notepad
with a yellow gear on it).
5) Highlight and delete the file.
6) Try to install the game now.

9. My mousewheel does not work in-game.
People having problems with the "mousewheel" on Logitech
mice should grab the latest version of Logitech's drivers from
the following location:
www.logitech.com
In addition to the latest version of "Mouseware" drivers,
you will need to download the "Mouse Registry File for Gamers" which
will allow the "mousewheel" to work within Star Trek
Elite Force II.
NOTE: Although "Mouse Registry File for Gamers" is
not listed as being needed under Windows® Millennium Edition
you will still need to download it in order to get the correct
functionality from the wheel. |

10. I
receive the error "Could not load OpenGL
subsystem".
- Check to make sure you have a supported 3D video card to play the
game. Star Trek: Elite Force II requires that you have one of the
supported 3D cards to play the game. Your card must have 100% OpenGL
support and at least 32 MB of memory. A list of the supported chipset
is listed in the minimum system requirements.
- Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from
the manufacturers' websites.
- If you have a motherboard with an onboard video card you need
to disable it in the system BIOS. Refer to your motherboard manual
and/or contact your motherboard manufacturer on how to do this.
- If you are using a video card which supports dual monitors,
the secondary monitor must be disabled for OpenGL to initialize
correctly.
- Make sure the 3D hardware acceleration is
turned all the way up:
For Windows 9x:
1) Right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and select
Properties.
2) Select the Performance tab and click the Graphics button.
3) Make sure the acceleration slider is set to Full.
For Windows XP and 2000:
1) Click on the Start button > Settings > Control Panel.
2) Double-click the Display icon.
3) Click the Settings tab.
4) Click the Advanced button.
5) Click the Troubleshoot tab.
6) Make sure the acceleration slider is set to Full.
Set your desktop settings to 640 by 480 and High Color (16 bit).
- All background applications must be shutdown prior to running
the game.
- If after trying the above solutions the game still does not
work, check the following:
1) Click on the Start button > Run and in the run box type "Sysedit" without
the quotes and click the OK button.
2) When Sysedit comes up you should see a bunch of cascaded windows,
select the window that says Win.ini above it.
3) The Win.ini window should come to the foreground, scroll through
the list of items until you come to [DrawDib].
4) Look for a line under [DrawDib] that says DVA=0 and remove
it.
5) Click File, then Save and close the Sysedit program.
6) Try the game at this point.
If you do not see the DVA=0 line under the [DrawDib] section,
then this is not the cause of your problem. DVA stands for Direct
Video Access, and is commonly set to 0 to fix issues with older
games or video problems with old software. Unfortunately it causes
Star Trek: Elite Force II to not recognize OpenGL support on
your system as well. The only way to fix this is to remove that
line. This should not affect anything on your system.
- Set your virtual memory to a fixed size.
1) Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
2) Click the Advanced button, click on Performance settings.
3) Click the Advanced tab, click the Change button.
4) Set the Virtual Memory to a minimum and maximum size of 600MB.
5) Confirm your selections until at the desktop - you may need
to reboot.
NOTE: These steps are specific to Windows XP, Windows NT and
2000 may differ slightly.
This will occur when insufficient Virtual Memory is available
for the game. For the best performance and stability under Windows
NT, 2000 and XP you should aim for having at least 600MB of virtual
memory available.
Windows XP Users:
Please note that the default drivers that come with Windows XP
are NOT OpenGL compatible. You will need to go to the video
card or video chip manufacturer and obtain the latest Windows
XP compatible drivers with OpenGL support. This is especially
true for ATi and nVidia based video cards.
