User maps:

By Kevin and Wim Cools..

It's possible to make your own Borg Nukem levels. To start with your Borg Nukem map.. first of all you have to make sure you have Borg Nukem's stuff (arts etc.) extracted so you're able to work with Borg Nukem's textures, sounds etc. If you haven't done this yet, use KEXTRACT.exe and use it like this: "kextract.exe nameofthegrp.grp *.* (to extract all files from that grp file).

Note before starting:

Borg Nukem has many new features and therefore it's user maps
can also make us of them. But because of the changes there are
also some new rules when building an usermap. Everything that
could possibly have been changed is explained in this manual. I suggest
you read the _entire_ manual before continuing building your own
usermap for Borg Nukem. If you just really, really, really can't
wait before building an user map for Borg Nukem there is one section
you should at least read: 2.4 Startup Trigger. YOU MUST USE THIS
IN EVERY MAP SO READ 2.4 BEFORE CONTINUING!!!

Startup Code Trigger
Fire/Smoke Particle
Selfdestruct Effector
Particle Effector
Sparks
Ladders

Building:

Startup Code Trigger (#3759):

What is it?
This effector will trigger the Borg Nukem Startup Code needed
to initialize your level and set some variables. If you don't use
this some problems could be developed while playing your map.

How to use it?
It is _very_ simple. Just place the Startup Code Trigger
(STARTUPCODETRIGGER #3759) at the exact point where you place
the brown arrow in BUILD (you know, the brown arrow inserted
when you press on SCROLL-LOCK in BUILD and which defines the
starting place of the user in the usermap).

It's very important you put this in your user level! Don't forget to do this because it can cause some troubles.

Note: You only have to place it at the point where the user
begins in your map, not at every point of an APLAYER when you're
building a Multiplayer Map.

Fire/ Smoke particle (#184):

This is very easy. Just press "s" to insert a sprite.. press "v" on it to select a texture. Select texture number 184 and press ENTER. If you run your map in Duke now.. you'll see the fire/smoke now! Note: if you come to close to the fire/smoke your health will drop.

Selfdestruct Effector (#3658):

The Selfdestruct effector was made to set a timer on the map so
you've to get to the 'exit' within a specified time. Great to make
your map a little harder and if you really want to mae your maps'
player to sweat behind his computer ;-)... When the selfdestruct
switch is activated the timer will start and cannot be stopped (okay,
you can turn your computer off, very funny). As long as the timer
is 'ticking' an alarm will sound in the entire map to make the
atmosphere a little more better. (There will also be a warning
after every minute how much time is remaining)

How to use?
Simple, just place the selfdestructor switch (SELFDESTRUCTEFFECTOR #3658)
somewhere in your map and give it a palette to specify the number of
minutes before the player gets killed if he is unable to finish
the map within the specified time.
the map.

Palette: Minuts before Self- Destruct:
1 5 Minutes
3 1 Minute
9 10 Minutes

Particle Effector (#3755):

What is it?
The particle effector is an effector that can spawn various
particles (such as snow) to improve your maps environment.

How to use?
Place the effector (PARTICLEEFFECTOR #3755) on the ceiling (except
when the particle is a water bubble, you have to place it on the
bottom of sector) and give it a palette to specify the particle
it has to spawn.

Note: The sprite of the particleeffector works the same as a the
sprite of, for example, the sectoreffector. You can see the sprite
in build but you won't see it in the maps. It just works! ;-)

Palette: Particle:
0 Snow Flakes
1 Water Drip (can also be used for rain)
2 Bubble(s)

Sparks (#5124):

Another type of particle in Borg Nukem are the sparks.
These are very easy to use. You can use put them under
broken lights or broken switches. All you need to do is
insert sprite #5124 and raise it to the height you want
the sparks to fall down. There are 10 different ammounts
of the sparks.
If you just insert sprite #5124 only two sparks will fall
down. If you give it palette 10, many sparks will find
down. So the higher the palette, the higher the ammount
of sparks. Giving a palette higher than 10 on this sprite
will not affect the amount of sparks dropping down.

Ladders:

Never got annoyed you couldn't make nice ladders in the
normal version of Duke Nukem 3d? Well, you can now!
It's actually pretty easy. First, pick your type of ladder.
You can choose from sprite #5121 and #5122. The difference
between those two is that #5121 is straight and #5122
is flat. You don't have to press R on them or anything,
it will automatically be changed into a "straight" or
"flat" sprite in-game.

After inserting the sprite (you need to block it; with B),
you can make the rest of the ladder by inserting more
of the same sprites above eachother on the same point.
Insert sprites until your ladder is high enough
to get to the player over there where you want
him to be. Now check it out in Borg Nukem. If you want
the ladder to be transparent.. just give the ladder sprites
a palette of 3.

Bot (#1820):

The BOT is also a cool new feature. (P.S: It's your friend,
so don't shoot at it). He'll help you to kill some enemies and
sometimes he will give you health when you're almost dead. He
will follow you until you go too far away, then he'll wait for you
if you decide to visit him again some time later. If you want more
information, just play the maps!

How to use in build?
You can just place the bot adding the qBOT (QBOT #1820) to
the map. You can place as many as you want but don't place 500 bots
in your maps because this will reeeaaallllyy slow up your map. The
qBOT logo is only shown in build, you won't see it in the game.
One BOT has a special function, he is team-leader and can provide the
player with a MED-KIT when needed. To choose your team-leader,
select the BOT in build and give him palette 14. (You can create as
many team-leaders as you want but that would be a little too easy for
the player. The team-leader can give the player two times a MED-kit.
After that the player's health can not be increased by the bot..

Palette: Type of bot:
0 Normal Bot
5 Guard
14 Doctor

Note: The BOT cannot used on all places in a map. It's a little hard
to tell you where you can use it and where you can't. Feel
free to try out, after a while I think you got the clue of
this...

Note II: It may occur that the BOT will shoot at you. This is not
because it's going to try to kill you but most likely an
enemy is standing behind you so the BOT thinks it's shooting
the enemy but you are in it's way.

Enemies:

NOTE: When you give an enemy pal 3 or 9, the BOT will NOT start
shooting at this enemy (only accidental).

Another change. The previous 'liztroop' character had an option
that it could 'beam' away from time to time by setting it's palette
to 21. This has been changed! If you want it to beam, give it
palette 5, not 21!

The different enemies have different strenghts in Borg Nukem. Be aware of that while making an user map!

Important Notes:

When building a user map for Borg Nukem be careful with the ITEMS.
Never use boots and/or the scubagear. You can better not use the steroids either.
