In the Beginning..
Ambassador Vrih sat down in his chair and released a sigh of exhaustion. What possessed me to become an ambassador? The question had never crossed his mind as often in the past few years. When he was asked whether he wanted to take over from T'maekh as Romulan ambassador on earth he had grabbed with the opportunity with little consideration. Within two weeks of being offered the positions he had accepted and often regretted it since. Romulans and Humans don't mix well; he was arrogant to think that he could do what the great T'maekh had failed to do. It was hard to imagine that it was already seven years ago that the senate had agreed to instigate new talks between the Federation and Romulus. Despite the apparent peace that had existed between the two for decades, Shinzon's actions seemed to have uncovered a large amount of smouldering hostility between the two. The mission description was simple enough, but it was turning into a tougher job than anyone had foreseen. Once and for all a mutually recognised border between the two territories had to be established, it sounded like nothing more than drawing a line. It would not have been so complicated were it not for many colonists from both sides having settled in the neutral zone. Both governments denied involvement in the colonisation, two lies coexisting happily, if only the peoples could do the same.

When it all had happened Vrih was a much younger man, or at least, so it felt. At first he had dreamed of finally seeing the two species integrate, Humans aren't Klingons, sure, they're full of themselves, but nevertheless they are very similar to us. That naïve dream had soon vanished however, both sides were just to proud. The inexperienced Romulan senate seemed to have its own agenda most of the time, constantly falling back to old ideas and principles. Vrih was now thinking of only one thing, getting this line drawn and going back home as soon as he possibly could, being around humans wasn't so bad, but being around Starfleet certainly did not improve his mood.

It dawned on the Romulan ambassador only shortly after taking the assignment that it probably wouldn't do his reputation much good. It was an impossible situation, neither side wanted to gain anything, long discussion is just what they wanted, nothing gained, but nothing lost either, to the politicians, it was win-win. Vrih knew his Federation counterpart had been on the case the full 7 years, he probably felt just the same.

The only worry for the Federation recently had been some skirmishes between the Klingon and Cardassian empires. This might have been good news in the past, but in these times where there was a large fear from newly encountered nemeses from the Delta and Gamma quadrant there was a great aspiration for more peace among the close neighbours. Even most Klingons were unhappy about fighting the Cardassians, but they were only hoping to fight more honourable battles against more worthy opponents.

The fear of a new race threatening the safety of the Federation was not quite as real for anyone as it was for a small group of people working at Starfleet intelligence. They had recently received threats from one of the races who had been angered by Voyagers presence in the Delta quadrant. The threats had not yet been authenticated, it was common for pranksters to try and create a stir amongst the Federation. For this reason Intelligence had not bothered Starfleet Command with the news. But if they were real, there would be grave consequences for the alpha quadrants stability.

It was all the Intelligence staff talked about during the first few hours after first receiving the coded messages. If they had managed to get into the Alpha quadrant so soon, they must be very powerful. Voyager's database showed them to be utterly pathetic, if they improved this quickly, how far will they get in the next few years. As if to make things worse the Federation had recently decided to halt research on new weaponry. Voyager had brought a vast array of new weapons with it, but the Federation had decided it would be too expensive to redesign the new line of ships to accommodate the new technology that would probably not be needed anyway.
With all attention focused on a possible peace with the Romulans and on ensuring peace between the other major Alpha quadrant species every seemed to be going smoothly for the Federation who were trying to get the best out of recent historical events. If only Voyager had encountered one less race in the Delta quadrant, the Krenim.
